Week of 3/27

Week of 3/11

Since no one showed up to the meeting last Thursday, we didn't really get necessarily the guidance we wanted to go further with our assignment. But no worry! We decided to continue to work on our projects. I'm currently trying to figure out the code we have and I want to expand the game from a 4x4 grid to a 5x5 grid. This requires that I redo the Q-learning table, which is surprisingly difficult to do. Everyone told me that it'd just be two lines of code, but actually it's like 500 lines of code that is configured to the specific game/function that the algorithm has to use to generate the Q-values. This is really complicated and I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm trying to dissect the code I have right now and see how I can modify it to create new Q-values, but there's a new error every time I try to run it. Sigh. This is kind of rough.

Due to the fact that these few weeks have mostly just been us trying to understand the code, there's really not a lot to write about. I'll talk about my spring break (gladly!), though. I didn't really do much over the spring break. I mostly stayed at home and I played some Minecraft with my friends, watched some YouTube videos, and drew. It's been a while since I've picked up my pen, so the first few days to reacquaint myself with the pen and paper was a little rough. Every piece gave me second hand embarrassment. It was like if God was like, "You're going to really love drawing but all you are going to draw are 3/4 and 1/2 faces." A little disappointing. I tried to tweak my art style a little bit, so here's a few examples of the things I've whipped up:

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Exhibit C

In Exhibit A, I tried to model the character after my own interests and some things from my childhood. Using a Windows XP-esque window combined with some game-stats-like format for character details under the person, it has a little bit of 00s nostalgia. From things like flip phones, gogurt, Hi-C, eraser tops, the Wii, and more, these were things that I've grown up with (or I've seen my parents with). It was really fun to draw and the color palette something I want to explore further. I named the character Carrol so it'd be like Carol but less 50-year-old yoga junkie/knitting enthusiast sounding. Exhibit B is actually a rough draft of Exhibit C. Exhibit B is something like a fallen angel-esque character, with its patched skin and stuff. Originally, the character took on more of a Frankenstien-y feel to it, but I didn't really like the face and the hair. I like the concept of putting wings (angel wings or just wings in general) on the lower back. It looks cooler, gives me more room to experiment/practice with chest muscles in the back, and it seems like it'd be more practical than having wings on your shoulder blades.

In the newer version of Exhibit B, Exhibit C portrays a more finished product. The left side is an imagination if the character had more slicked-back hair. It looks a little bit wacky because my side profile art style is... a lot different compared to my normal facing-view art style. You can take that phrase as "I learned to draw face by copying other art styles and the artist I copied from was most certainly not the same artist I copied my front-profile style from." It'd be a lie to say that I'm entirely copying from people I guess, but since I don't have an art teacher the only way I can really learn how to draw is by looking at how other people online draw and then trying to simulate their style. From then on, I think once I get a handle of drawing in someone else's style, I can learn to develop my own style. Who knows? I'm still learning and experimenting. :)
