Week of 1/16

Week of 12.17

We went to CalTech on Thursday and pitched our final report ideas to Dr. Hassibi. He went through our entire list of ideas and gave us the four most feasible ideas that we could work with in this time period: 1) an e-cigarette detector/sensor, 2) a device that uses haptic gloves to translate ASL to words, 3) a game-playing robot, or 4) a recommender system using data from Yelp. All of these ideas are in their own way, (and in my own words), extraordinarily epic, and I think that either of these options will be fun to delve into.

Over the break, I was fortunate enough to organize a trip with my friends to go to Korea-town in Downtown Los Angeles. The Subtle Asian Traits Facebook page has hyped Gong Cha up a lot, and we actually found a Gong Cha across the street from the restaurant we were eating at. I tried the sugar-free Taro bubble tea, and it would be an understatement to say that the drink was delicious. The rich, savory taste coupled with the fabulously delightful aftertaste made my first Gong Cha experience incredibly satisfying. After the much needed tea run, my friends and I went to Sushi Ippo and enjoyed an all-you-can-eat sushi experience, upon the recommendation of my cousin who lives in Korea-town. The sushi was savory and practically melted in my mouth, and we actually had the opportunity to try oyster.

I think the best way for me to describe the taste of those oysters is for you to imagine a cold crunchy slug that has marinated in the raw fish aisle of the Asian supermarket for two months. It's most certainly an acquired taste. I think I'm starting to like it, though. I guess people do change after all. We also got a taste of fatty tuna and expensive-tasting eel. They were both lavishly delicious, and tasted like the musky breeze of a July dusk. In other words, it tasted great. You should've been there. We enjoyed ice-cream desserts after at Bumsan ice cream!

Bumsan ice cream is an ice cream shop along the streets of Korea-town. The store's owner's daughter is part of a k-pop group in Korea, and NCT apparently visited the ice cream shop in the past as well. Their ice cream is very good but incredibly overpriced. I would still recommend their shop for all of you to enjoy.

Over the weekend before school started, my debate partner Edmond and I went to Arizona State University for a debate tournament. All was well until Edmond got super sick and could barely talk. Every word he uttered carved pain into my ears. Despite the adversity, were able to get top 8 at the tournament and get to our bid round. He did pass whatever virus or something he had to me, and I've been sick and bedridden over the weekend after and I'm still very sick and contagious now. I hope I get better so I can duly focus on my research and work on developing those super sick (haha get it) gloves and the Yelp data set.
